The Board of Supervisors appointed Margaret Jadallah to the ninth seat for a three-year term that began on July 1st, 2007.

The June 11th SamCERA election results have been certified. Bette Perroton Stuart has been reelected to the Eight Seat (retiree) and John Murphy has been elected to the Eighth Seat Alternate (retiree alternate). Their three-year terms begin on July 1st, 2007.

Tom Bryan ran unopposed for the 3rd seat (general member) and was reelected to a three-year term beginning on July 1st, 2007.

The Board of Supervisors reappointed Scott Lee to the 5th seat to serve a three-year term beginning July 1st, 2007.

SamCERA has issued two technology related RFPs. The first is for a Comprehensive Strategic IT Plan, and the second RFP is for a Web Redesign Plan.

Two board member positions and an alternate board member position were filled in an election June 12. These results are scheduled for acceptance by the Board of Retirement on June 27.
Deputy Sheriff David Wozniak was elected to fill the safety seat on the board or retirement.
Alma Salas, Deputy Probabtion Officer III, was elected to serve as alternate for the safety seat.
Paul Hackleman, was reelected by the general membership to fill the second seat on the board. Paul is the Benefits Manager for San Mateo County.
The board member and alternate board member terms of office will begin in July. Terms are for three years.

The Board of Retirement for the 2006-2007 fiscal year will consist of nine members and two alternates.

One position is for a General Member of the association. The other is for a Safety member.

Nomination petitions will be available April 17 through May 1, 2006 from the Elections Office.

They must be returned to the Elections Office no later than May 1.
The election will be June 12, 2006..

SamCERA's 2006 Cost of Living Increase (COLA) will be 2%. It will be reflected on the April 30th, 2006 SamCERA benefit payment.

Interest was granted to members at 3.8% for balances as of 12/31/2005

For the eighth consecutive year, SAMCERA has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. SamCERA received the Certificate for its financial reporting for the 2003-2004 fiscal year as detailed in its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). The award is presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) to government entities that achieve the highest standards of accounting and financial reporting.

According to GFOA, “The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.” GFOA further stated that the SamCERA CAFR was “judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.”

SamCERA also recently received a GFOA award for its Popular Annual Financial Report. PAFRs are intended to summarize financial information for lay readers. To achieve the award, the SamCERA PAFR was evaluated for its creativity, presentation, understandability and reader appeal.

This is the second year SamCERA has received the PAFR award.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 16,000 government finance professionals.

Sid McCausland (CEO of SamCERA) has announced his retirement
(05/26/2004)

After ten years of guiding the San Mateo County Employees' Retirement Association, Sid McCausland has announced his retirement. Mr. McCausland's last day as Chief Executive Officer will be March 31, 2005. Mr. McCausland was SamCERA's first Chief Executive Officer at an important part of SamCERA's history. Under his direction the Retirement System's assets have grown to $1.4 billion and his staff has implemented complicated benefit improvements in a swift and accurate manner. Mr. McCausland has put into operation many state of the art technological advances for the membership such as the benefits calculator and web based information and forms. The Board thanks him for a decade of service dedicated to the Constitutional mandate ensuring the "delivery of benefits to participants and their beneficiaries, minimizing employer contributions and defraying reasonable expenses of administering the system.

The California Supreme Court announced October 14th that it will not accept any appeals of the Ventura II decision. The announcement means that Judge Pollak's Superior Court ruling now has the force of law. SamCERA and the other parties to the lawsuit will be preparing a plan for the implementation of the ruling.
